Comment by the Artist (2001)

As I Set Out is a painting dedicated to Edward Elgar. He describes his love of the English countryside and his hearing of his music in the air all around him. I experience this feeling on setting off down our lanes. I feel delighted in the distant noise and in the passing incidents and detail all parts of the voyage out. This one is of Spring when the Queen Anne's Lace lines the lanes and the great ash is only just coming into leaf, it being after the oak this year.

The figure is of an old gypsy man who used to walk these lanes daily until he died last year (2000) aged 90.
