Supplementary Information

'All Hallows' is the title of a 1926 short story by Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) an author whose writing Ovenden admires. The cathedral of the painting is very much inspired by the story - its precarious location, in particular.

Ovenden wrote a poem entitled 'The Sea Cathedral' which was included in his collection of verse, Satirical Poems and Others (1983).

The late Clive Wainwright (in his essay 'Architecture and Antiquities' in Graham Ovenden, Academy Editions, 1987) points out that another influence on the painting is the church at Dunwich in East Anglia which eventually was claimed by the sea's erosion of the coast. Ovenden wrote a poem entitled 'All Saints Dunwich', which was included in his 1984 collection, The Marble Mirror.
